Volunteer for us

Volunteering for Heart of Kent Hospice is a rewarding experience, you can gain new skills, meet new people and be part of something very special. Do you have a few hours to spare each week, or on an occasional basis and would like to find out more about volunteering?

We are fortunate to have over 570 volunteers at Heart of Kent Hospice.

Our volunteers range in age from 14-95 and play a vital part in the work of the Hospice.

Over half of our volunteers support our retail shops in the local community, while others give their time to help in the Hospice or at our fundraising events.

There are many reasons why our volunteers get involved in our Hospice. For some it is about giving back to the community and for others, it is their special way of saying thank you to the Hospice for the care of a loved one.

To find out more about volunteering, please contact the People Services Team at volunteers@hokh.co.uk or call 01622 792200.

Could you give just 1 - 2 hours a week to offer friendship and support to a person affected by terminal illness or frailty and experiencing loneliness or social isolation in your local community?

The Compassionate Neighbour project was launched in January 2020 to tackle social isolation and loneliness for those living with a life-limiting illness or frailty in Maidstone, Tonbridge and Malling and surrounding towns and villages.

Volunteers from B&Q Larkfield

Colleagues have shared with me personally that they've had family members stay at your Hospice and they really appreciate what you and your staff do, so it was our pleasure to be able to give back in whatever way we could!

I wanted to volunteer my time to help at Heart of Kent Hospice as, having had experience of a family member in a hospice, I know what amazing places they are for both the patients and the families of that patient.  The care and kindness they show is literally invaluable at such an awful time.  I loved helping at the Tunbridge Wells shop with Sue and Sarah, they were so kind to show me all aspects of working there in the short time I was with them.  I also was truly impressed with how well run the shop was, how organised they were and the care given to making it into a place where people can come, peruse and buy top quality second hand items.

"I really enjoyed my time working at the Tunbridge Wells shop, as it is such a great cause. The ladies (Chloe, Sarah and Elaine) at the shop were all so kind and happily showed me the ropes, they made my time volunteering in the shop fun.  I also enjoyed interacting with the customers."

"We all really enjoyed our time helping out at our local Heart of Kent Hospice store for the afternoon. Barb, Eve and Tracy were so welcoming and helpful. It was really interesting to see the hard work that goes into making the shop run smoothly and it was nice to get properly involved in the day-to-day organisation tasks even if it was only for a short amount of time. Thank you to the ladies at the Aylesford store for having us – we will definitely be back soon!"

After I was given the position on reception, I immediately realised we are often the first face that patients and their families encounter when they arrive. I know it’s a difficult time, so I try to make everyone feel as welcome and at ease as possible.
