Introduction

We at the Heart of Kent Hospice believe that, faced with a terminal illness, people need chioces and support, compassion, comfort, and help to get through tough times, when they need it and where they want it. We believe in the richness and surprise of the human spirit, and celebrate and nurture it even at the worst of times.

Our vision is for a community in the Heart of Kent where everyone receives the support and care they need when faced with a terminal illness, either directly or indirectly. That support and care should be availble to all wherever, however and whenever it is needed.

We estimate that during any one year there are 1250 people in the Heart of Kent who could benefit from our services as the end of their life approaches. The Hospice is currently in touch with only about 37% of these people and their families.

We need to raise £2.2m from the local community towards our current costs of £3m per year. We rely on the support of individuals and businesses to raise this amount.

How your support makes a difference

Without your support, we would have achieved nothing.  Virtually all our funding has come from the people of the Heart of Kent, both to establish the Hospice and to run it.  With your support we have been able to:

•   Care for 824 patients per year
•   Carry out 3,481 home visits to patients per year
•   Provide over 200 families with bereavement support per year

However, there is so much more that we want and need to do over the next five years.  Most specifically, we want to:

• Increase access to our current service for all those suffering from life-threatening conditions.
• Increase the range of services we provide in patients' own homes.
• Develop our education and training services so that professionals are better able to identify patients approaching the end of their lives so that they receive the best possible end of life care.
• Promote awareness of our vision amongst the community so that they expect and receive the highest possible standards of care when faced with terminal illness.
