Update on Hospice redundancies

Heart of Kent Hospice consultation update

8th February 2017

As you may know Heart of Kent Hospice has been hit hard by the uncertain economic climate and we have needed to remodel the Hospice to help reduce our expenditure by £574,000 annually. In December, we started a Collective Consultation process with our employees to consult on how these cost savings could be made by remodelling our services with proposed redundancies. Whilst all redundancies are regretful, productive discussions during the Collective Consultation process have meant that we have been able to minimise the number of redundancies. In total, ten colleagues will sadly be leaving the Hospice as a result of voluntary or compulsory redundancy.

Sarah Pugh, Chief Executive says “All redundancies are regretful, and we are disappointed that we have had to make these changes. Throughout this challenging time, our goal has been to minimise the impact on our patients and their families and we continue to be committed to providing the 566 patients currently in our care, the support they need, when and where they need it.” We are pleased that another four colleagues whose roles have been made redundant have accepted alternative employment at the Hospice, meaning that the Hospice, our patients and their families can continue to benefit from their skills and experience.

In these times of economic uncertainty, it is however essential that we continue to do all we can to ensure the Hospice’s long-term financial stability. This is why our Get Behind Heart of Kent Hospice campaign is so important. We’re asking our local community to ‘Get Behind’ their local hospice as a donor, fundraiser, volunteer or ambassador. We’re delighted that over £60,000 has already been raised through our Get Behind campaign; we want to raise £600,000 this year and, from community groups to schools to companies to individuals, we have been overwhelmed by the support everyone has shown for their Heart of Kent Hospice.

Sarah Pugh, Chief Executive, Tony Moffatt, Chair of Trustees and members of the Hospice leadership team are hosting a Public Forum at The Monckton Education Centre, Heart of Kent Hospice on Tuesday 21 February at 6pm. Following an update on the changes that are being introduced, there will be an opportunity for guests to ask questions about the challenges faced by the Hospice, our plans to secure the long-term financial stability of our Hospice and how you can ‘Get Behind’ Heart of Kent Hospice. If you would like to attend, please send your details to ann.bubb@hokh.co.uk or call 01622 792200 x 206 before Thursday 16 February.
