Record number of runners take to the streets for the Hospice

Posted on 13th March 2019

In its 5th year, a record 660 runners registered for this year’s Heart of Kent Hospice Maidstone Road Run. Whether warming up for spring races, challenging themselves to a new personal best or just having fun with family and friends, runners chose one of 4 distances; chip timed half marathon, 10k or 5k races, or the 1k family fun run.

Starting from Cornwallis Academy, Hubbards Lane, Maidstone, 542 chip timed runners set off in very blustery conditions. They ran along the beautiful country roads around Linton, Boughton Monchelsea and surrounding villages. Many runners commented that they enjoyed the new 10k route. The event also offered a family friendly 1k run which many children participated in with prizes given for the best fancy dress outfits on the run.

Over 40 volunteers generously gave their time to park cars, register runners, lead the warm up, marshal routes, hand out medals, take photographs and drive sweeper vans. “Without our amazing team of Hospice colleagues, volunteers and partnership suppliers it wouldn’t be possible, everyone was truly amazing, thank you” said Erica Snow, Events Manager at Heart of Kent Hospice. Erica continues, “Each and every runner had a personal reason for taking part and a running goal they wanted to achieve. I am so pleased that the new 10k route has received such positive feedback. In achieving their personal goals, runners have helped to fundraise for the Hospice which has to raise £4 out of every £5 it spends. To date this year the event has raised a phenomenal £21,000 with further sponsorship still coming in.
