The local community can make their Will and support Heart of Kent Hospice during Make A Will Month launched on 1 October. Heart of Kent Hospice has partnered up with seven local solicitors, who have all waived their fees, to offer local residents the chance to make or update their Will in return for a suggested donation to the Hospice.
Last year saw a huge rise in the number of people making or updating their Will, however, three in five UK adults have not written a Will, which means that 31 million people may not have their wishes met when they die.
Making a Will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, ensuring that your estate, whether money, property, possessions or investments, will be passed onto the people and causes you care about.
Without a Will, it’s left to the Government and ‘intestacy rules’ to decide who gets what, and this could mean that some of your assets could end up in the hands of those you would never have chosen, causing unnecessary bureaucracy for your loved ones and increase the inheritance tax and residential care fees on your estate. Writing a Will is a lot easier than you might think and isn’t as time consuming or complicated as you may first think. It can even be completed virtually.
Claire Ashby, Supporter Care Manager for Heart of Kent Hospice said: “We have been supporting more families than ever this year who have suffered sudden or unexpected bereavements and we see how much more difficult it can be for those loved ones if there is no Will in place. Make A Will Month provides an opportunity to act to make sure all of your plans are in place for your relatives and at the same time supports your local Hospice.”
Whilst there is no obligation as part of this month to leave a gift in your Will to us; your kindness would have a huge impact on the work of the Hospice, enabling us to be able to care and support patients and their loved ones for the next 30 years. New Government allowances on Inheritance Tax could mean that a gift in a Will could not only benefit Heart of Kent Hospice but also families and friends, as the amount of tax on estates can be lowered by charitable giving.
