From Hospice shop volunteer to shop manager

Before starting a family, Lisa had a career in retail that she absolutely loved. When her children were old enough to go to school, and she was looking for ways to fill her time, Lisa’s husband suggested she volunteer in her local Heart of Kent Hospice Shop in Lenham.

Lisa thought it was a great idea: “It was close to home, fitted in with my family, and was something I’d loved doing before I had my son.”

It wasn’t long before Lisa decided to move back into retail permanently. With her background and experience, she quickly secured a job with a well-known high street retailer, but changed her mind when she realised it would mean giving up her role with the Hospice. “It was an easy decision to make,” Lisa explained, “I love the team of volunteers and knowing that the money we make goes directly towards helping people who really need it. It also fits in with my family life and gives me a sense of purpose.”

The story doesn’t end there for Lisa. Later that year, the shop manager role became vacant and she decided to apply for the job. Lisa is now officially the Manager at Heart of Kent Hospice Shop in Lenham.

If you would like to join Lisa and her team of volunteers, pop into the Lenham shop Monday – Friday between 10:00am - 4:00pm, or email volunteers@hokh.co.uk or call 01622 792200 ext 225.
