Inpatient care

Like the rest of the Hospice, our Inpatient Unit is bright, airy and welcoming. It’s a calm and peaceful place, but with its fair share of fun and laughter.

When you arrive at the Hospice, you will be met by our friendly colleagues and volunteers who will settle you in and help you feel at home.

We will also invite you to complete our ‘Hello’ form which will help our team learn more about you as an individual.

Our medical team will meet daily to talk about your care and visit you in your room to talk through your symptoms, treatments and any questions and concerns you may have. We ensure you receive the best possible care during your stay with us and that you and your family are treated with courtesy, dignity and respect at all times.

It’s a common misconception that patients only come into the Hospice when they’re near the end of their lives.

Whilst some patients do choose the Hospice for their end-of-life care, most patients come for a short time to help improve their quality of life before they return home. They may come for a full assessment of their needs, for rehabilitation to enable them to adjust to the challenges of their illness, or to better manage their symptoms.

Generally, patients stay on our Inpatient Unit for approximately 10 - 12 days. In all cases, when they’re ready to return home, our Hospice Community Team will review their needs to ensure that their environment is safe and suitable for them or can be adapted to be so.

Inpatient room facilities

Each room is clean, spacious and features an ensuite shower room, smart TV, DVD player and Wifi. All of the rooms on our Inpatient Unit open out on to our beautiful Hospice garden or decking areas, where patients can enjoy local birdlife, wildlife and visiting squirrels. We secured funding to install Visualite panels to provide patients in some rooms with the opportunity to enjoy some extra light and the beautiful trees, clouds and blue sky scenes.

Our brand new spa bathroom

Thanks to generous funding from charitable trusts and foundations including the Morrisons Foundation, we are able to offer our patients a luxury spa bathroom in our Inpatient Unit, in addition to the en-suite walk-in shower and toilets in each room.

The bathroom has adjustable mood lighting, surround sound speakers for music, a scenic woodland wall and a jacuzzi bath with hoist. As a Hospice, we strive to provide the very best service for our patients, and the new bathroom creates a truly relaxing experience.

Computer on wheels (COW) prescriptions

Since March 2022, we have used electronic prescribing in the care of our patients using a special platform created by our pharmacy provider, Ashtons Pharmacy. We have three mobile computers which can be taken into a patient's room and used by nurses to track their medication needs.
