Spiritual care

We provide emotional and spiritual care for patients and their families.

Our Spiritual Care Team are here as a listening ear, to help you explore your emotions and we hope you’ll feel more at peace.

Faced with the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, people often struggle with an array of emotions. Searching questions may arise at such a challenging time, as we all seek to try and make sense of our experiences. Your individual experience, feelings and views will be respected whatever they may be. For some people, religious care forms part of this, but it is not true for everyone and need not be the case.

Our Spiritual Care Team are regularly available on the Inpatient Unit at the hospice, at the Hospice Hub and Bereavement drop-in sessions. Our ‘Olive Tree’ room is open 24/7 offering a multi-faith space for quiet reflection and meditation.

If you are a patient or family member under our care, you can also request to speak with someone from the Spiritual Care Team by calling 01622 792200 or email us on fst@hokh.co.uk . If we are unable to answer the phone, please leave us a message and someone will contact you as soon as possible.

If you would like to see someone from your own religious community, our Spiritual Care Team work closely with clergy and faith leaders from across the local community and can try to arrange for them to visit you and your family at the hospice, or in your own home.

We have a number of spiritual spaces at the hospice for you to use.

We have a beautiful garden at the Hospice, which is frequented by wildlife, providing a peaceful oasis. We encourage you to use it as you need. We also have a dedicated room – the Olive Tree Room – for quiet reflection. We have a variety of books there from different faith traditions and none, poetry books and books of readings. Please feel free to use the room for your own spiritual needs.

Spirituality means different things to different people.

Spirituality means different things to different people. Our spirituality is the essence of our selves – it is what makes us who we are. We might express it by looking for meaning and purpose in our lives, or by creating the best relationships between ourselves and those who are important to us, or by establishing our place in society.

For some it might be about being in nature, in our gardens or in the countryside. We may get our spiritual nourishment from music or the arts, from our own creative endeavours, or from the appreciation and relationship with family and friends. Spirituality is not the same as us holding a religious belief or having an attachment (however distant) to a particular faith tradition. For some people spirituality may be connected to religion, to prayers and to rituals that bring comfort and connection, but religion is only one component of human spirituality and the spiritual care offered by our Hospice.

Everyone has a spirit, and everyone has spiritual needs. Whatever it is that sustains you, gives you hope, meaning and comfort, our Hospice Team will support you with it.
