Bluebell Walk legend opens this year’s event alongside the Mayor

Ivor Knight has taken part in and fundraised for every single Bluebell Walk we've had!

Each spring, when the North Downs burst into colour, hundreds of walkers gather for one of our most cherished traditions: Bluebell Walk. This flagship hospice event has grown far beyond its humble beginnings, yet its spirit remains the same - community, connection, and the joy of walking. 

The first walk to raise money for a new hospice was in May 1990. A simple, community initiative, led by Bill Butler of the local Lions Club, the walk had just 200 participants, starting from the beautiful Grade II–listed Harrietsham Manor.  

Among the many supporters who have laced up their boots each year, one name stands out - Ivor Knight, who has taken part in and fundraised for every single Bluebell Walk. Ivor, with no prior links to the hospice, joined that debut walk in 1990 for one simple reason: “I just love to walk, and I wanted to help a good cause.” 

Over time, Bluebell Walk has become a hospice-led event and has grown into a firm favourite across the community. Ivor has noticed changes in nature too, “The bluebells have always been out for the walk but they definitely come earlier each year.”  

What hasn’t changed is the camaraderie. For Ivor, the Bluebell Walk is more than an event - it’s a tradition, a community, and a personal commitment. 

Community and Events Fundraising Manager, Maisie Bass-Clark said: 
“We are so excited to have Ivor and the Mayor Cllr Martin Round opening the Bluebell Walk this year. The hospice wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for people like them. As we mark our milestone of 35 years of hospice care, it seems totally fitting that our Bluebell walk legend should be the person to cut the ribbon.” 

Taking place on Sunday 3 May 2026 in the stunning North Downs near Harrietsham, the six-mile walk winds through ancient woodland and open countryside at the height of the bluebell bloom, offering participants a chance to experience one of nature’s most iconic displays up close. The Mayor and Ivor will be opening the event at the 9am wave of walkers. 

With demand for hospice care continuing to grow, community events like the Bluebell Walk play a vital role in sustaining services from specialist nursing and symptom control to emotional, practical and bereavement support for patients and their families.
