Peter joined the Hospice as a Compassionate Neighbour volunteer eight months ago. In this article he shares his motivation for supporting the programme, the joys of volunteering and his advice for those considering becoming a Compassionate Neighbour volunteer.

It is a free, community-led, social programme offering friendship and support to those with a terminal illness, frailty , or are of advanced years. The Team also support carers who are experiencing loneliness or social isolation. The support is offered to people right across Maidstone, Tonbridge, Malling and nearby areas.

When I found out about Compassionate Neighbours, it sowed the seed for me to support a local charity. I felt my background in supporting people living with terminal illnesses would be suitable, so when I had some extra time on my hands, it seemed the perfect thing to do. It's a privilege to contribute in this meaningful way and I am glad I applied.

I am motivated by seeing how the support that I offer as a friend makes a significant difference to someone. I am the person they can talk to, about anything. It's not just about being a friend; it's about being a trained friend. The training provided by the Hospice Team guides us to be non-judgemental and good listeners so our friends feel heard and supported. A Compassionate Neighbour volunteer plays a crucial and valued role in the community, and with every visit you see the difference you make.

I would say, "Give it a go". In my experience, people surprise themselves with the difference they can make. You'll be amazed at the value you can bring by simply sitting down with someone and sharing a cup of tea.

For me, the joy of reinforcing my learning through practice has been a significant party of my journey. The training has given me insight into other people's experiences and helped me become more open-minded. I've become a very good listener. I actively look for opportunities to apply my learning with every interaction, knowing that it will benefit others.
