Light up a Life - Maria's Story

A smiling woman sits on a sofa in the Hospice Hub

“It was when my husband David was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s that we were referred to Heart of Kent Hospice. As well as helping him with their extraordinary compassion and expertise, the Hospice Team supported me emotionally. I don’t know what I would have done without them.

Your story of how you came to know Heart of Kent Hospice will be different to mine, but I’m sure there will be similarities, because we’ve both been there.

Since David died, Light up a Life has become an important date in my diary. It brings me such comfort and I feel sure it could do the same for you. When you’re trying to hold everything together you don’t get any time for you. Light up a Life is a bit of time for you. It’s an opportunity to be still for a while and to remember.

It’s a heart-warming mixture of readings, music and poetry. It’s not a religious service, but you are sure to be touched by it, whether you have a faith or not. It’s another moment for you to gather with family and friends and remember those who are no longer with you.

Everyone will be in a similar situation to you. Everyone there has experienced some loss, and that joins us all together. You can feel it.

Light up a Life is also an opportunity for people like us to come together in showing how much we care about the Hospice Team and to support their work in return.”
