Steve: Volunteers Week 2026

Our volunteer photographer, Steve, taking pictures of our Bluebell Walk

Steve - Volunteer photographer

I’ve always been a hobby photographer, and around 12 years ago, a friend in the hospice fundraising team asked if I would take a few pictures at an event. Ever since then, I’ve truly felt like part of the team. People have come and gone, some have stayed, but everyone has always made me feel welcome and appreciated.

I still cover most of the events, but in the last couple of years I’ve also started coming into the hospice itself to take photos. I remember being a bit worried at first about saying or doing the wrong thing, but then I spent an hour or two with Laura, one of the nurses. She talked me through the whole end‑of‑life process and everything they do, which was incredibly reassuring.

Being in and around the hospice is, of course, a real reminder of what it’s all about. Taking photos of people having a good time at events is relatively easy by comparison.

Volunteering here has taught me a lot and helped me grow my skills and style. It has even led to a few other photography opportunities – including shooting a colleague’s wedding – which was a lovely bonus. The team have also been very welcoming to my son, who has taken an interest in photography too.

Because I can work flexibly, I’m able to fit my volunteering around everything else. My employer also gives five volunteer days a year to support causes we care about. There are so many charities out there, but I really enjoy seeing local, friendly faces and being part of my community. It’s great to be able to use my hobby to support the hospice - it doesn’t feel like a chore or another job. I love it.

If you’re thinking about volunteering, start by asking yourself this: what skills do you have and what makes you happy?

Whatever it is, you can bring those skills and experiences here. And if nothing else, you’re donating your time doing something you enjoy, which saves the hospice money that can instead be spent on patient care. There are so many people doing things you wouldn’t immediately think a hospice would need. It’s not what you might expect at first, but there’s always something to do and such a lovely bunch of people to do it with.

I feel very proud to say that I volunteer for the hospice. I love seeing my photos being used to promote its events and services - and I hope you do too!
